Francesco Cavallin La Doriclea edustaa italialaisen renessanssi-ilmaisun huipentumaa sekä alkusysäystä barokin estetiikalle. Venetsian karnevaaleilla 1645 ensi-iltansa saanut ooppera perustuu Giovanni Faustinin librettoon, joka joutui sensuurin kohteeksi jo alkumetreillään. Syynä tähän oli tarinan queer-romanssi, joka haastoi aikansa seksuaalisuuden ja sukupuolen konventiota: Kahden sotaisen kansan taistellessa amatsonisoturi Doriclea joutuu vangiksi rakastuen vihollisensa siskoon, prinsessa Eurindaan. Molemmat naiset ovat kuitenkin poliittisissa liitoissa omiensa parissa, ja mustasukkaiset kilpakosijat piirittävät paria yrittäen paljastaa heidät. Cavallin aikalaisia hätkähdytti erityisesti naisten välinen viettelykohtaus, minkä vuoksi oopperan esitykset jäivät lyhyeen. Vaikka queer-tarinoita on käsitelty oopperan historiassa usein verhoten tai humoristisesti, Cavallin teos on rajoja rikkova esimerkki avoimen kunnioittavalla pohjaviestillään.

Musiikillisesti La Doriclea on hienostunut esimerkki 1600-luvun alun tyylistä ja innoitti Pietro Andrea Ziania sekä Antonio Vivaldia laatimaan uudelleensovituksensa libretosta. Tanssin talon esityksessä oopperaa reunustavat instrumentaali-intermezzot, eli välisoitot, ajan pohjoismaisesta Düben-käsikirjoituskokoelmasta.

La Doriclea by Francesco Cavalli showcases the culmination of the expressive revolution of the Italian Renaissance and impetus for the aesthetics of a new era. The opera, based on Giovanni Faustini's libretto, premiered at the Venice Carnival in 1645. Central to the action is a love story between an Amazon warrior, and her enemy’s sister, expanding on the convention of gender variabililty and taboo romance in opera and stage history. The unconventional opera was censored both during the libretto’s composition period, and shortly after its premiere, largely due to the seduction/love scene between Doriclea and the princess Eurinda, and to this day performances have been rare. The story is set against a struggle between two warring nations. After being captured, the Amazon warrior Doriclea falls in love with her enemy's sister, Princess Eurinda. The attraction is mutual, but both women are linked romantically and politically to powerful men. Jealous rival suitors attempt to separate and expose the lovers, in different ways. This opera, along with others by Cavalli, highlight historical transgressive and queer elements in opera. Usually these elements were disguised or treated humorously; La Doriclea is open and respectful about its diverse and expansive core.

The opera is a sensitive example of early 17th century musical style, and despite its short run, the story inspired compositions (now lost) and reworkings by later composers Pietro Andrea Ziani and Antonio Vivaldi. With intermezzi from the Düben manuscript collection, this production is the Finnish premiere of the work.
