ENSEMBLE NYLANDIA
Early music collective – baroque orchestra, renaissance consorts & more
Baroque orchestra
A versatile baroque orchestra with brilliant musicians, stellar early music expertise and a big heart. Founded in Helsinki in 2009 by its artistic director Matias Häkkinen and a group of Finnish baroque musicians, it is renewing and shaking up the field of early music with its innovative risk-taking attitude. One of our specialities is an exceptionally large basso continuo group.
Nylandia’s main focuses and favourite genres have been orchestral collaborations and dramatic projects. Operating from Helsinki, Nylandia is internationally active with frequent guests and several Nordic and European collaboration projects. We also frequently work and perform with Finnish symphony orchestras and universities like Sibelius Academy and Estonian Academy of Music with historically informed performance practices and early music projects.
Every July we bring our music to eastern Finland for our residency at the BarokkiKuopio festival. Nylandia also collaborates closely with Aurore – Helsinki Renaissance Music Festival.
Renaissance consorts
Nylandia is also a renaissance orchestra that consists of its own renaissance consorts: Q consort (renaissance recorders), Eloisa consort (viola da gambas), a renaissance traverso consort and a consort of plucked instruments. We can accommodate a variety of different pitches (415, 440 and 465) and tuning systems.
Music collective and a production platform
We provide opportunities to our members to share their talents, projects, and artistic ideas and offer a place to cultivate them. Our musicians have experimented with different genres, electric instruments, improvisation and arrangements, and on the other hand have had space to research and focus on specific time periods, historical styles or manuscripts.
As a production platform Nylandia runs its own office and project organisations. We also produce the Café Barock concert series and BarokkiKuopio and Aurore festivals. Being a collective, all of our productional staff are also musicians and members of Nylandia.
