In its original form, G.F. Handel's 18th century opera, "Acis & Galatea", tells the tale of a water nymph and a shepherd whose love affair is disrupted by a jealous cyclops. But let's be honest, that' not the easiest story to relate to in the 21st century...
In this adapted version, we follow the story of two 19th century women, Acis and Galatea, who have been caught off-guard by mutual affection for one another. Even though this new romance inspires feelings of freedom and excitement between them, it cannot be freely explored without serious consequences of social persecution. The story unravels in the hidden depths of the woods, where a secret community of people have been forced underground for their ways of self-expressing in terms of gender and sexuality. The peace and harmony Acis & Galatea enjoy with this community is soon disrupted by Polyphemus, Galatea's husband. When he discovers Acis & Galatea exchanging vows of love, he accuses Galatea of madness. In response, she harnesses the courage to be honest with her self and her husband - she loves Acis and will remain true to her in spite of social persecution. In an act of vengeful rage, Polyphemus attacks and kills Acis. The community banishes Polyphemus and gathers around the mourning Galatea and together they transform the fallen Acis into a natural memorial.
